  • A Person

Photo by Roman Melnychuk on Unsplash
    we made a person
    how beautiful
    how incredible
    look how she grows

    we made a person!

    but . . . she isn’t ours
    she belongs to herself

    so,
    let’s watch her
    let’s love her
    let’s help her

    because together
    we made a person

  • Your Blue

Photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash
    my love for you
    is the color blue
    not a hint of sadness—
    a loving hue

    your eyes, the color
    of a soothing sky
    are what I need
    for a daily high

    within your arms
    life is fresh and new
    my love, to me,
    you’re the color blue

    your blue is gentle
    and calms my heart
    your blue is the abundance
    you always impart

    your blue is the breath
    i need to take in . . .
    blue is your humor
    always making me grin

    your blue is masculine
    and soft, and strong
    immersed in your depths
    is where i belong

    your blue is bright,
    a mountainous high
    my romantic moon
    under a starry sky

    your blue is my anchor
    on a violent sea
    my steady sailor
    you always will be

it’s a gift to be loved
    by your sapphire soul
    my connection to you—
the other half to my whole

    my cherished sweetheart
    my perfect blue
    my favorite color
    will always be you

  • Appreciated

Photo by Christiana Rivers on Unsplash
    appreciation
    is like:

    a warm shower
    after a long day
    out in the cold
    or like a sunbeam
    that breaks
    through the clouds
    to warm
    the top of your head

    it’s like
    a loving hug
    after a long period
    of loneliness
    or a belly laugh
    after
    a good cry

    oh, how i want
    for you
    to feel
    appreciated

    shhh . . .
    hush now
    everything’s okay
    it’s all temporary
    there’s a place
    beyond this one
    where there is peace
    and where there are answers
    to all of your questions
    but for now,
    hush,
    breathe,
    open your eyes
    and go back to life

  • Something Divine

Photo by David Clode on Unsplash
    i’m convinced
    that Something Divine
    breathed magic
    into us, our relationship

    something sacred has been there
    from the start
    even before we began
    stitching our lives together

    i’m grateful
    when i think back
    on the firsts
    of our embraces
    because that fire
    forged the place
    i now call
    my permanent home,
    that safe space
    within your arms

    we share memories
    experiences
and a passion for each other
    that defies logic and reason
    when you consider
    how different we are
    but i think
we’re the best kind of love story

    when teens talk
    of passion
    and of knowing
    their love is real
    the world rolls its eyes
but time gifts a union like ours
    validity and respect
    i’m glad we kept going
    when we were young,
    that we loved and fought
    for us, our relationship
    in spite of the world
    and its skeptical eye-roll

    somehow we knew
    early on
    that a lifetime together
    was ours for the taking

    because of you
    i know what
    companionship
    intimacy
    forgiveness
    and safety
    feel like

    because of you
    I get to experience
    rare,
    mature love

    I see the lines deepening
    on our faces
    and I wonder
how has this happened so fast?
    it’s all so beautiful
    and brief

    together,
    we are something special
    complex but simple
    just a lovely brushstroke
    on the canvas of humanity
    on an original painting
    by Something Divine

  • Dehydrated

Photo by Jens Johnsson on Unsplash
    a dehydrated soul
    typically looks
    in all the wrong places
    for a source
    of liquid love
    to quench
    its thirst

    in desperation
    it swallows
    all kinds
    of vices
    that will never
    satisfy
    the universal need
    to be loved

    oh, to know
    that the source
    of liquid love
    is an inner river
    of gratitude
    that sometimes trickles,
    sometimes cascades,
    but always flows
    and must be
    consumed
    in sweet
    sacred
    silence

    with my hands
  • Love Harvest

Photo by Chien Hao Lee on Unsplash
    it's true
the degree to which you open your heart
is the degree to which you can hurt
    but don't be a coward
    throw yourself open
    be vulnerable
    and greedy
    gather all the love
    you can possibly hold
in the basket of your heart

then, if life takes it away
    embrace the waves of grief
    that will surely come
    scatter the remaining petals
    of your love
    on each oceanic swell
    until the surges subside
    and become gentle
    with your heart
    once more

    yes,
    to gather love
    is to be brave
    and wild,
    but wise

    know this:
    hurt never lasts
    beyond life
    but love does

    so, pick up your basket
    return to the fields
    and harvest some love
    again
