A Thoughtful Poetry Blog

  • Lucky Bay

Photo by Michael Quinn on Unsplash
    i see you floating there
    just off the shore
    and i must encourage you
    to pick up that oar

    it might be nice
    to relax and stay
    but around the bend
    is Lucky Bay!

don’t let the name fool you
    anyone can go
    and seize opportunities
    if only they’ll row

    so pick up that oar
    and give it some hustle
    you make your own luck
when you use all your muscle

    i can’t wait to see
    all the luck you create,
    the way that you’re rowing
    is proof you’ll be great!

  • Dehydrated

Photo by Jens Johnsson on Unsplash
    a dehydrated soul
    typically looks
    in all the wrong places
    for a source
    of liquid love
    to quench
    its thirst

    in desperation
    it swallows
    all kinds
    of vices
    that will never
    satisfy
    the universal need
    to be loved

    oh, to know
    that the source
    of liquid love
    is an inner river
    of gratitude
    that sometimes trickles,
    sometimes cascades,
    but always flows
    and must be
    consumed
    in sweet
    sacred
    silence

    beloved mountains
    your breath
    lives in my blood
    north, south, east, west
    you circle me in majesty

    you are
    my fortress
    my ever-changing painting
    my points for navigation
    my comfort for my eyes
    my loyal, stable friends
    my promise for adventure
    and peace

    you are
    regal sentinels
    silent witnesses of my life

    you stood before i came
    you'll stand
    long after i've gone
    but somehow
    i know
    you'll remember me
    because your breath
    lives in my blood

  • Who Says

Photo by Shirish Suwal on Unsplash
Who says you can't be wise and respected when you're young.
Who says you have to get your education within four walls at a desk.
Who says you need a college degree to be successful in life.
Who says you need to earn more than six figures to live your best life.
Who says you have to get a job, get married, and have children.
Who says you can't be healthy and strong when you're old.
Who says you have to live a gender role.
Who says a lot of things,
    but never mind Who
    what does You say?
  • Nurturing Nature

Photo by Gerrie van der Walt on Unsplash
    please,
    don't bury me
    in a cemetery
    among an ocean
    of corpses
    preserved
    with formaldehyde

    sprinkle
    my ashes
    beneath
    a fledgling tree
    where i can
    carry on
    with my
    nurturing nature
    and help
    something grow

    i heard it was naughty
    but i found it nice
    so fun, in fact
    i did it twice

    blindfold me
    i could find you
    in a lineup
    with my hands
  • Solvitur Ambulando

Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash
    it seems insurmountable
but i know what to do
    get your shoes
put the dog on a leash
    open the door
    and walk with me
we need the sun on our faces
    new air in our lungs
    movement
    is the remedy
    the elixir
    that loosens
    dammed words
    congested emotion
    paralyzed perspective
    step by step
    word by word
    tear by tear
    we can solve it
    by walking
  • Cyclical Creature

Photo by Javier Allegue Barros on Unsplash
    i am a woman
    a cyclical creature
    designed like the moon

    who i am today
    is different
    from who i am
    one week
    two weeks
    three weeks
    from now

    today,
i am a sliver of myself
    i'm somber, pensive, and numb
    the weight of my cares
    is heavier than usual
    my perspective is cloudy
    sodden with emotion

i don't like this version of me
    yet, here she is again
and in spite of my dislike of her
    she will be me
    for more than 3,000 days
    of my feminine life

    every month
    i can't wait
    until she leaves
    i always sigh with relief
    and welcome
    the returning fulness
    of myself

    this me
    smiles and laughs
    she's fun and sexy
    so shiny, dynamic, and strong
    i wish
    she could stay forever
    but i guess
    if she did
    i wouldn't appreciate her
    like i do

so, let the lunar cycle continue
    and my metamorphosis carry on
    because
    i am a woman
    a cyclical creature
    designed like the moon
  • Just Dance

Photo by Austin Schmid on Unsplash
    every moment is rough
    when you're in a rut
    so turn on a bop
    and shake your butt

    life's too short
    to pout and brood
    dancing will always
    improve your mood

    so, let your hair down
    when you're all uptight
    if you loosen those hips
    you'll start to feel right
