  • Over There

Photo by Harli Marten on Unsplash
    hey,
do you see that person over there?
    the one you think is
    quiet and weird
    they have a story
    that you don’t know

oh, and that person, over there
    the one you think is
    obnoxious and wrong
    they have something to offer
    that you can’t see

maybe you should walk over there,
    start a respectful conversation
    and then listen
    because
    you will always
    learn the most
    from the people
    over there

  • Something Divine

Photo by David Clode on Unsplash
    i’m convinced
    that Something Divine
    breathed magic
    into us, our relationship

    something sacred has been there
    from the start
    even before we began
    stitching our lives together

    i’m grateful
    when i think back
    on the firsts
    of our embraces
    because that fire
    forged the place
    i now call
    my permanent home,
    that safe space
    within your arms

    we share memories
    experiences
and a passion for each other
    that defies logic and reason
    when you consider
    how different we are
    but i think
we’re the best kind of love story

    when teens talk
    of passion
    and of knowing
    their love is real
    the world rolls its eyes
but time gifts a union like ours
    validity and respect
    i’m glad we kept going
    when we were young,
    that we loved and fought
    for us, our relationship
    in spite of the world
    and its skeptical eye-roll

    somehow we knew
    early on
    that a lifetime together
    was ours for the taking

    because of you
    i know what
    companionship
    intimacy
    forgiveness
    and safety
    feel like

    because of you
    I get to experience
    rare,
    mature love

    I see the lines deepening
    on our faces
    and I wonder
how has this happened so fast?
    it’s all so beautiful
    and brief

    together,
    we are something special
    complex but simple
    just a lovely brushstroke
    on the canvas of humanity
    on an original painting
    by Something Divine

  • Social Serenity

    god,

    grant me the serenity
    to accept the people
    i cannot change
    (everyone else)

    the courage
    to change
    the person
    i can
    (myself)

    and the wisdom
    to remember
    this truth

    amen

  • Love Harvest

Photo by Chien Hao Lee on Unsplash
    it's true
the degree to which you open your heart
is the degree to which you can hurt
    but don't be a coward
    throw yourself open
    be vulnerable
    and greedy
    gather all the love
    you can possibly hold
in the basket of your heart

then, if life takes it away
    embrace the waves of grief
    that will surely come
    scatter the remaining petals
    of your love
    on each oceanic swell
    until the surges subside
    and become gentle
    with your heart
    once more

    yes,
    to gather love
    is to be brave
    and wild,
    but wise

    know this:
    hurt never lasts
    beyond life
    but love does

    so, pick up your basket
    return to the fields
    and harvest some love
    again
