  • October

    whispers of chill
    dwindling light
    the crunch of leaves
    reflective sight

    vivid foliage
    arresting breeze
    a blanket's softness
    nighttime freeze

    production slows
    holidays stir
    indoor activities
    nostalgia's purr
  • Time’s Up

Photo by Gabriel Jimenez on Unsplash
    environment’s sick
    people are sick
    can’t afford
    to ignore
    the problems
    anymore

    refuse plastic
    conserve water
    eat plants
    innovate
    reuse and recycle
    everything

    hurry, quick
    get outside
    touch the earth—
    plant something
    for the children

  • Relation Frustration

Photo by Andrik Langfield on Unsplash
    if only
    we could unzip
    this flesh
    that blocks us
    from seeing
    each other
    clearly

  • This Morning, I’ll Be

Photo by Soner Ozmen on Unsplash
    i walk quietly
    through an expanse
    of dewy grass
    and feel
    the tall blades
    deposit cool droplets
    on the skin
    of my ankles and feet

    my eyes settle
    on the opal mist
    hovering above
    the heavy heads
    of summer wheat
    stretching as far
    as my eyes can see

    i breathe in the coolness
    of the air
    and notice the way
    it moves crisply
    across my exposed skin

    i lift my eyes
    to the horizon
    and watch
    as an unseen hand
    paints soft pastels
    across the sky

    an overgrown path
    winks invitingly
    offering
    to take me
    somewhere new
    but i decline
    because
    i have no desire
    to go or do
    i just want to be
    a part
    of this lovely morning

  • Cyclonic Mind

Photo by Camila Quintero Franco on Unsplash
    topsy turvy
    upside down
    thoughts in my head
    are spinning ‘round
    each one stays
    only a second or two
    i think i need
    some super glue
    to make them stick
    to make them stay
    i can’t hold on
    but hey,
    everyone’s a little crazy, right?
    everyone has this terrible blight:
    thoughts that spin
    and won’t hold still?
    thoughts that circle
    against your will?
    sometimes, i’d give anything
    to make them pause
    but i think i’m fighting
    some natural laws
    that govern me
i just wanted you to see
the cyclone that is my mind
    so please, be kind
    because
    the placid face you see
is a false representation of me
    circling, circling
    so unkind
    this chaotic prison
    that is my mind
    i’m trapped in here
    with just myself
    if only i had
    a sturdy shelf
    a place to rest
    these restless thoughts
    i’ve begged and plead
    and desperately sought . . .
    relief
    relief
    relief

  • Appraisal

Photo by NIKITA SHIROKOV on Unsplash
    how curious
the way you appraise your body—
    as if it were you.

  • Her Longing for Freedom

Photo by Tom Blackout on Unsplash
    oh, to be free
    to roam the world
    without fear
    of harm
    abduction
    and rape
    to wander
    and discover
    for herself
    the serenity
    of the natural world
    whenever she wishes
    without any need
    for protection

  • Therapy

Photo by Peng Yang on Unsplash
    come,
    step with me
    into the ocean
    of emotion
    it’s vast and deep
    and sometimes
    dark
    cold
    turbulent
    and scary

    but together,
    we will float
    in the discomfort
    and trust
    in the darkness

    together,
    we will tread
    the waves

    then,
    we will dive
    deep
    deeper
    deepest

    but don’t be afraid
    i promise
    we’ll surface
    knowing things
    we never knew
    that we never knew
    about you

  • A Person

Photo by Roman Melnychuk on Unsplash
    we made a person
    how beautiful
    how incredible
    look how she grows

    we made a person!

    but . . . she isn’t ours
    she belongs to herself

    so,
    let’s watch her
    let’s love her
    let’s help her

    because together
    we made a person

  • Your Blue

Photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash
    my love for you
    is the color blue
    not a hint of sadness—
    a loving hue

    your eyes, the color
    of a soothing sky
    are what I need
    for a daily high

    within your arms
    life is fresh and new
    my love, to me,
    you’re the color blue

    your blue is gentle
    and calms my heart
    your blue is the abundance
    you always impart

    your blue is the breath
    i need to take in . . .
    blue is your humor
    always making me grin

    your blue is masculine
    and soft, and strong
    immersed in your depths
    is where i belong

    your blue is bright,
    a mountainous high
    my romantic moon
    under a starry sky

    your blue is my anchor
    on a violent sea
    my steady sailor
    you always will be

it’s a gift to be loved
    by your sapphire soul
    my connection to you—
the other half to my whole

    my cherished sweetheart
    my perfect blue
    my favorite color
    will always be you
